What Is Reverse Osmosis and How Does It Work?

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a water purification technology in which feed water is treated by passing it through a semipermeable membrane. The membrane blocks ions, molecules and larger particles while allowing water molecules to pass.

How does it work?

Under normal conditions, water moves from the less concentrated side to the more concentrated side because of osmotic pressure. In reverse osmosis, a pressure greater than this osmotic pressure is applied to the feed water. Dissolved substances are retained on the pressurised side of the membrane and purified water passes to the other side. The clean water is sent to the point of use and the separated substances are discharged to a drain.

How effective is it?

Combined with pre-filtration, reverse osmosis can remove 90 to 99.99% of the dissolved impurities in water. Because it removes many dissolved and suspended species, including bacteria, it is used both in industrial processes and in drinking water production.

Which system is right for you?

AquaTroy offers industrial and commercial reverse osmosis systems, containerised reverse osmosis systems protected from external conditions, seawater desalination systems and domestic RO systems for homes and offices. Contact us to size the right system for your project.
